A small exhibition at the Museo del Prado in Madrid was designed to give the blind and those with limited sight an opportunity to create mental images of paintings by feeling them. There are six replicas of famous works in the exhibit. The paintings are created using high-resolution images that are treated with a chemical process and ink to add volume and texture to certain areas of the work. One visitor who had seen the one of the actual paintings before losing his eyesight in his youth said, "It's one thing to more or less remember what it was like and another to be able to touch it in all its details. It's like getting back my eyesight." http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/07/arts/design/at-museo-del-prado-blind-visitors-can-touch-masterpieces.html

Posters! Thoughts of sports stars, teen sensations and hot cars we used to have taped to our bedroom walls might come rushing to mind when you hear the word posters. However in the context of marketing and communications, posters are the foundation of large format print materials being used today.
At gawck, we print posters on a variety of materials: foam board, vinyl, plastic, fabric and of course paper. All have their specific applications, but it is the paper poster that is the most popular. We attribute this to three factors:
Many Types, Many Uses: the paper poster is the multi-tool of products at gawck
Environmental Choice: all of our paper posters are easily recyclable and release no VOCs
Economical Choice: affordable to purchase, quick to produce, easy to transport
MANY TYPES, MANY USES
Our customers are often surprised when they discover that there is so much more to paper posters than simply a large print out. “I didn’t know you could do that” is a common refrain. We have two classes of paper posters, multi-purpose and specialized.
Multi-purpose paper posters
gawck multi-purpose paper posters are made of high quality, 130lb heavyweight poster paper. These commercial strength paper posters are printed at a high 600dpi resolution using our durable and vivid eco-friendly latex colour inks. Intended for indoor use, they can be adhered to walls, windows and other surfaces using either the double-sided removable tape or foam squares that are included with each poster. They can also be hung using poster rails or placed into commercial and decorative poster frames. gawck multi-purpose paper posters are available in three finishes:
Light gloss: the default choice and our most popular paper poster, our light gloss paper poster has a slightly glossy appearance in both printed and unprinted areas. This provides a coated look over the entire poster without the distracting glare of a high gloss finish. Light gloss is the most durable of the three finishes and suitable for virtually all situations.
Satin: an increasingly popular choice, our satin paper poster has a light gloss appearance in printed areas, and no gloss in unprinted areas. This creates a unique contrast effect with a upscale or artistic look. The low glare satin finish is also a good choice for posters being displayed in direct sunlight or under spotlights.
Matte: our matte paper poster has absolutely no gloss in both printed and unprinted areas. This zero glare finish is a good choice for presentation and academic posters as it keeps text easy to read and provides a no smudge surface for posters being written on in workshops. Some people also choose the matte paper poster to give their designs a soft, somewhat chalky appearance reminiscent of watercolors.

gawck specialized paper posters
Beyond their specific uses, our specialized poster line up is unique in that it was created to offer an environmental and economic alternative to some of our vinyl and plastic products.
Outdoor posters: gawck outdoor posters are ideal for use in outdoor sign frames, transit shelters and billboards. They are water, tear and scratch resistant making them a popular choice for harsh indoor environments as well. An excellent alternative to plastics and laminates for shorter term use (two to four months depending on how harsh the environment).
Hanging posters: gawck hanging posters are made of a rigid, heavyweight poster paper that can be printed single or double-sided. These very strong posters can even have grommets inserted to assist in hanging. They make an excellent recyclable alternative to vinyl banners and styrene posters used indoors, and emit no VOCs making for a healthier indoor environment.
Window posters: gawck window posters have one side that sticks directly to inside of the window. They can be printed single sided or double-sided, meaning your message can face inwards, outwards or both ways. They contain gawck block which eliminates show through. Easy to apply and removable once your promotion is over, gawck window posters are an excellent alternative to cling vinyl.
Sticky back posters: gawck sticky back posters are similar to our window posters but for walls, doors, and many other smooth or lightly textured surfaces. These posters have a sticky back that is strong enough to hold it in place, but removable, like a giant sticky note. Very easy to apply, these sticky back posters provide a unique alternative to double sided tape and foam squares.
Backlit posters: gawck backlit posters are made of a white poster paper that is an environmentally sensitive alternative to polyester backlit film. Our backlit posters are suitable for indoor lightboxes, outdoor lightboxes, and even outdoor transit signage.
Double-sided posters: the same double-sided paper used in gawck hanging posters can be used in any wide format double-sided printing application you can dream up.
In addition to the many choices available, gawck paper posters are an environmentally responsible choice for two reasons.
First, our printing process, what we call gawck green™, does not use any solvents nor do our inks emit any VOCs (volatile organic compounds). With gawck paper posters, you simply won’t have the heavy smell that you get with traditional solvent inks. We use a durable, commercial grade ink and printing technology from Hewlett Packard that does away with the era of harsh solvent printing or the constant need to laminate the delicate posters produced on photo printers.
Second, all gawck paper posters are recyclable in ‘general stream’ recycling. If you can recycle standard paper, you can recycle gawck paper posters. In the case of our sticky back or window posters, you simply peel the adhesive layer away from the poster before recycling the paper portion. If we’ve put grommets into your hanging posters, simply tear or cut them out before recycling the rest.
The final reason for the popularity of gawck paper posters is simple: they are a very economical form of large format print graphics. Even our specialized posters are very economical to purchase as the nature our materials and print technology does away with many costly forms of finishing. Our pricing won’t be beat and we offer complimentary local delivery, with just a nominal fee for areas outside of the Greater Toronto Area.
Paper Poster Power!
With all the choices available, plus the environmental and economic benefits, it’s no wonder posters continue to be a staple of large format print communication. We’d love to hear from you so contact us anytime for pricing, assistance in choosing a material and any additional information.

Artist Yayoi Kusama created a giant blank canvas at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art. But this canvas was not flat and actually replicated a home--except that every wall, chair, table, piano and household item was painted white. Over a period of two weeks, visitors were given thousands of colored dot stickers and were asked to place them as they liked in the space. This was the result...
